A NEWMARKET SCHEME,

ROAD IMPROVEMENTS,

The provision of Work for the unemployed has been engaging the attention Of Newmarket Borough Council for some time, and at last night's meeting a definite scheme was approved. A loan not txceeding £3000 is to be raised, and certain street improvements, which have been needed for a long time are to be undertaken.

Between Carlton Road and GeOrgo Street, and extending from Park Road to Tetoki Street there is an area known locally as "No Man's Land." It is here that the principal improvement work is to be done, at a cost of £2200. The proposed work includes excavation and formation of a footway in Carlton Road, excavation and formation of a footway, kerbing and channelling and extension of the carriageway m George Street.

Another Work to be done is the forma* tioli of Mortimer Pass in accordance with plans submitted by the City Council. A recommendation that the funds be borrowed under the provisions of Itelief of Unemployment Act and that application be made for the Government Subsidy" oil the cost of labour was Approved.
