forestry league alert.

I (By Telegraph.--Press Association*) WELLINGTON, Wednesday, lhe annual report of the New Zealand Forestry League, presented at a meeting of the league la.-t evening, lavs stress on the work of the league in preserving several historic spots throughout thfi Dominion as national moniunents. _ The president, llr. A. L. Hunt, emphasised the menace of erosion of Dominion's lowlands as an ever-increas-ing danger which, if not cheeked, would mean to the countrv a fabulous loss of wealth in the years to come. He attributed the erosion to the thorough denuding of watersheds of their forest gron'tii. The State, he was assured, would pW" perly control its own lands in tiii s respect, but unfortunately many such areas were, held by private persons, who could not be expected to pay interest, rates and taxes for the benefit of their fellcwman. He trusted the league would devote its energies to this aspect of torestry with renewed vigour.
