"SMALL" BOOKMAKER.

UNUSUAL CASE,

NO KNOWLEDGE OF II AC IX Q

A plea of guilty was entered in the Police Court this morning before Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., by a young man, Maurice Goodman, aged 2S. changed with carrying on at Auckland the business of a bookmaker.

Chief Dctective Cummings said that for two weeks prior to the June race meeting accused had run a shilling double. A dispute arose over the striking of a double, and it was this that led to accused being in Court. With regards to the dispute there had been no reason for it, as the man who caused the trouble had not struck a double.

Mr. Goldstein, who appeared for accused, said that it was not the ordinary case of a man making his living as a bookmaker. Accused, who had never been before the Court previously, had met with considerable misfortune and the expenses which he had to meet were abnormal. lie was paying off old debts and had been out of work. Lately he had found himself getting into debt and had used bookmaking as a means of supplementing his income. He knew nothing about horse racing at all and had made only £0 8/ out of the business. Under these circumstances counsel asked that accused's name be suppressed. If the trouble came to the knowledge of his employers he would loose his position. Chief Detective Cummings: The book shows that the man docs not know much about laying off doubles. The magistrate refused the application for the suppression of accused's name. Accused was convicted and fined £7.
