The Duchess of Sutherland has fired ihe first shot in a new campaign against I "crashers."' namely, uninvited guests who make a practice of walking in calmly to society balls and functions. They consisv chiefly oT young men and women on the fringes of society, the I men polite, debonair, immaculate, wiity, j and excellent dancers, and the women I pretty and daintily dressed- They i flood popular hostesses and I functions to such an extent that they elbow the real guest* out of the ballrooms and supper tables, causing an undignified search for further provision*. Recently supper dainties, including : strawberries and caviare, at one popular house vanished magically, and many of the guests went supperles*. The hostess counted up her guests the next morning, and found that she had unwittingly entertained 2.V) "crashers." These uninvited guests cleverly trait till the dance is in full swing and the hostess is busy.
