THE IRISH FREE STATE.
"COMFORTING NEWS."
(To tae Editor.)
To Irishmen and Irishwomen, their de«~dante the world over, and to Ireland, the culminating scene of the ree»«J general elections cabled last week w as ~T forting news. That there is a wide divE of opinion in the Free State is manifested br the various parties elected to the Dail Kortv four electorates object to the terms of thJ treaty. The remaining parties favour the terms of the treaty, while thev differ in the form, of its administration. It is here w e witnessed last week in a eoiintrv hitherto remarkable for the virulence of its political strife, the spectacle of pole-ujde opponents meeting happily under religious teachings and influences, and immediately afterward* attempting in a constitutional' and peaceabla manner to settle a most momentous national issue. It augurs well for the future of Ireland Now, it is the opinion of many students of Irish history, ancient and oontemporarv. that the "political division" of Ireland is the root cause of the trouble, and. were the count rv united under one form of Government, the objections to the treaty would be minimised. They say, "We desire the country given to us by God, and uot the country given to us by politicians." Two expensive forms of Government in a small country like Ireland is ridiculous, so ridiculous that it cannot and will not last. To remedy this defect will be the task of the rising generation when the "highbrows" of this generation shall have passed with all their passions and prejudices. The politically-made border line which separates Ireland to-day is the cause of as much acrimony and distrust between a people whose every interest demands unity as that which obtains in the two great Continental Powers divided by the Rhine. Unitv is essential. JUSTITIA.
