HAMILTON BOXING.

HAY DEFEATS LOVERIDGE. LOSERS PLCCKT FIGHT. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") HAMILTON, this day. A very successful tourney was put on last evening by the Frankton Boxing Association in Hamilton, the main attraction being a challenge bout of fifteen threeminute rounds tor the welter-weight chani plonship and belt, between the holder Artie Hay, of Hastings tlOst 4Jlbi and Dick Loveridge. of Wellington (lost 6 Jib I. There was also a purse of £100. Hny won the match on points, and was easily the best boxer. In the second round Hay got a good right just under the jaw. and this brought Loveridge down to the canvas for a count of six. Hay followed this up with a straight left, and down went the Wellington man again to seven, and the round ended with a very groggy Loveridge The latter was an obviously tired man in the next, and Hay just kept hitn at bay with measuring hits. Then Loveridge recovered somewhat and made , the eighth a very willing go indeed, and wh»n the gong rounded thai round could be called "even." Loveridge got his opponent on the defensive for a time in the twelfth, but Hay's clever boxing and footwork got him out of trouble. The next round saw Loveridge in trouble again, and with a left hook Hay connected with his opponent's jaw, and down he went for a count of nine. Hav meant business for the last round, but Loveridge pluckily fought it out, and received a great ovation for his rluckv fieht, after his gruelling in the second round and against a better boxer. With Burns holding op Hay's hand the crowd found no fault, and gave the Hastings boy the reception he deserved for his clean fighting.

Mr. R. T. Reid. president of ihe association, then presented the wlnneT with the belt, congratulating both fighters and announced challenges to the winner on behalf of Harry Casev (Reefton) and Nelson McKnight (Hamilton).

There were also some pood amateur horns, a particularly lively one of six two-minute rounds was between Ackland Vernall. 9.12 (Frankton) and Len Gee. 10.4 (Tauranga). The match was for the Howden Welterweight Challenge Cup. the holder being Vernall. Tt went the full six two-minute rounds. Vernall «>arlv forced the fisht and. while the man from Tauranra keot his opponent busy, he was rather shy in connecting up. especially with his longer reach: and if he had used that advantaee the third man would probably have held up both hands. Mr. Frank Burns, of Auckland, was the referee, and gave universal satisfaction, while Mr. J. McKinnon was announcer, and Messrs K. T. IJoid and J. Smith in charge of the pong.
