DISPUTED TITLE.
Claimant of Marqnisate of Ely. PIQUANT CONTROVERSY. LONDON". June 12. A piquant controversy in the form of newspaper interviews has been in progress with regard to the present holder of the title, said he was prepared to grive £1000 to charity if Augustus Loftus. who says he is the son of the fourth Marquis, can substantiate his claims. Augustus Loftus had previously stated that he was not interested in titles, but was content with his present position in life. George Herbert Loftus, the present Marquis of Ely. is the sixth holder of the title. On the death of the third Marquis in July. ISo.. he was succeeded by his son (fourth Marquis), who died without issue in IBS 9. the title passing to his cousin, the eldest son of the Rev. Lord Adam Loftus, the third son of the second Marquis (fifth). He died without issue and was succeeded by his brother, the present Marquis (sixth). The Marchioness, whom he married in 1902, is the youngest daughter of the late Nigel Gresiey. of Hobart, Tasmania.
