A dispatch carrier on duty, being prised' by certain members of the German army and covered with uL , a scalp wound, tumbled off his damaged bicycle at J° m of a shell-riddled farmhouse in France. S staglered tZ the kitchen and collapsed at the feet of a small damsel who was stirring a pot on the fire. Before he lost consciousness he thrust an oilsilk-covered packet into her hands, imnlorine her to hide it from the enemy, .as it contained precious secrets. On recovering some time later, he found that the same small person was binding up his wound, that the packet was nowhere in sight, and that whatever was in the pot on the fire smelt exceedingly good. "Did they get it:"' he asked anxiously. "Non, monsieur," she replied, "eet ees quite safe. Zey fink you keeled. Zey go wizout zee packet." "Where is it?" "Eh, bien, monsieur," said the little mademoiselle cheerfully, waving her hand towards the pot, x "eet ees een zee •oupI"
