HAURAKI PLAINS AFFAIRS.

MEETUfG OF COUNTY COUNCIL THE RIVER WHARVES QUESTION. (.From Our Own Correspondent.) XGATEA, Friday. Tlie Hauraki Plains County Council met at Ngatea to-day, Mr. E. Walton, county chairman, presiding. The Matamata County Council asked if the council thought that an alteration should be made in the Counties Act. to provide for the financial year ending on June 30, instead of March 31. The council decided to reply that they considered the present date satisfactory. The suggestion of the Ohinemuri County that the adjac-ent counties should appoint a joint traffic inspector was not favourably considered, the council maintaining that they required the full services of one man.

In reference to the request from the Hauraki United Drainage Board for permission to erect two new bridges across the Huirau and Turua-Netherton Roads respectively- and also some financial assistance towards the same, it was decided to give consent, the former bridge to be 14ft -wide and the latter 16ft, both fitted with hand rails. The council could not see its -way to contribute towards tie cost.

The River Wharves. The old question of purchasing the river ■wharves in the county, which has been dormant for some time, was again introduced by a letter from the chief drainage engineer, who wished to know if the council was still seriously considering the proposition. This led to a lenethy discussion, which was finally closed by the chairman's motion. "That in view of the diminishing utility of the wharves and the probable shortness of the life of the same, the council is prepared to take them over at a nominal price. That the revenue be derived by way of charges on goods coming into and going out of the districts served by the wharves." It was also decided to forward a copy of the resolution to the chief drainage engineer, intimating that the council would be prepared to discuss the matter. The Electoral Boundaries. The council decided to support the proposed inclusion of Waikino and Karaneahake in the Thames electorate, provided the Hauraki Plains boundary was not j altered. It agreed that Hauraki and not Thames should be the name or the I electorate.
