Mr. Lewis told the police that he was driving along Willis Street, intending to drive into Boulcott Street. On receiving the signal from the constable on point duty he turned to go up the rise into Boulcott Street and sounded his horn to warn pedestrians passing. Just prior to reaching the footpath crossing he knocked over two women. This he said, unnerved him and he lost control of the car. He endeavoured to stop, but knew little more until the fatal accident had happened. Car Mounted Footpath. Mrs. Walsh said two women stepped from the footpath by the Albert Hotel and were struck by the car. Then Mrs. Walsh saw the car swerve toward herlelf and her sister, and gripping her sister by the arm she pulled her back on to the footpath. The car came straight toward them, over the corner of the footpath. The next thing she remembered was being helped up near the footpath on the opposite side of the road. The ear was facing toward Manners Street and her sister was pinned underneath it. The accident happened at one of the busiest and most dangerous street intersections in the city, and within a few minutes an enormous crowd had gathered.
