CONSTABLE ASSAULTED.
MAORIS "FIGHTING DRUNK." SENTENCE OF HARD LABOUR. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) CAMBRIDGE, this day. The sequel to a serious disturbance at the rear of Messrs. Clark and Sons' premises in Duke Street, last* evening, was the appearance in the Police Court this morning of Edwin McKinnon and Rangi Keba, charged with being' drunk and disorderly, and with assaulting the police. Yesterday the two accused and another native consumed considerable liquor, and then began lighting, and a complaint was made by a third native to the police that he had been assaulted. When Constable Cleary went to make an arrest he was attacked by the two Maoris in real Donnv-brook fashion. Four young natives went to the constable's assistance and the accused men finally arrested, much the worse for wear. On the charge of being drunk and disorderly the accused were merely collected. but the Bench took a more serious view of the assault on the police and sentenced both men to 14 dav s " hard labour in Mount Eden gaol.
