END-OF-SEASON FISHING.
CONDITIONS UNFAVOURABLE. TROUT SEEN CLIMBING RAPIDS. WANGANUI, this day. X Wanganui angler states that the weather conditions were not very favourable for the last week of trout fishing at Tokaanu. Large numbers of fishermen were there, excepting the usual big run of fish from the lake to the upper waters of the Tongariro Li\er, but the river was in high flood and unsuitable for fly fishing. Some anglers who \ isited the Witikau and Waitakara streams obtained good baskets. A few days before tne season closed trout were seen in hundreds running up the rapids of the Waitakira stream mar the prison farm. In manv case- the fish were half out of the water and yet were able to run up the rapids ac a remarkable pace. Since the Government has taken over control of the Taupo fisheries and purchased the natives' fishing rights it has spent a considerable sum in opening up roads and tracks to give access to fishing pools along the Tongariro River, but it is asserted that if there is going to be anything like the number of rods on the river this coming season that there has been in the past, then other fishing waters must be made available to angler?. It is to be noted that last Easter no fewer than from 200 to UOO fishermen were attempting to fish the Tongaiiro River at one time, and fishing etiquette went by the board.
