TOURING THE DOMINION.

WITH VALUELESS CHEQUES.

EX-CANADIAN OFFICER,

JUDGE'S SOX

A DRUG ADDICT

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

DUXEDIX, this day

Douglas Charles Hopewell, described as a Canadian, appeared before the Police Court to-day to answer several charges of obtaining money by means of valueless cheques. It was stated that accused was an officer in the Canadian Flying Corps who had been shot down into the German lines and since then had been a drug addict. His parents— his father being a judge of the Supreme Court—sent him to New Zealand. Accused had visited many towns in the Dominion, cashing valueless cheques. He was recently ordered reformative detention at Invercargill. The magistrate ordered accused to be detained for two years, and suggested that the Prisons Board should have him returned to Canada.
