LIMITING COLLECTIONS.
The advisability or otherwise of limiting the number of street collections was discussed at last night's meeting of the City Council as a result of a notice of motion tabled by Mr. J. Paterson to the effect tha-i the resolution passed on November 35, 1926, restricting the collections to six a year, be rescinded. It was also suggested that each future application be dealt with on its merits. Mr. Paterson said he did not wish to labour the point, but he thousht the council was satisfied that, in limiting the number \>f collections, it did nc" do quite the right thing. l n supportin? the motion, another councillor said that the present was an abnormal time and with the existing restrictions there was a probability of them shutting out genuine cases. Mr. J. A. C. Allum drew attention to the fact that experience showed that collections were liable to become a nuisance, and urged that the limitation be nine. Miss Melville described the collections as a tax on the business people. She predicted the time when associations desirous of raising money would have to make united appeals, dividing the proceeds, instead of making constant individual appeal? tinder the present system. After further discussion the original motion was carried.
