FIGHT AT ICORTHCOTE.

What was termed "a private squabble""! at Xorthcote on the evening of April ! 30. last, was ventilated at the Police j Court thi< morning, when John Kennedy j Brown and llobert Cava ye. two young men appeared, charged with fightins; with each other. Brown was further' charged with having assaulted Alired i U. Griffiths. Sub-Inspector Lewin prosecuted, while Mr. A. G. Davis apj-eared for Brown, pleading not guilty. Griffiths said that he saw Brown '"laying it on good and hard"' on Cuvaye, who was very drunk. Witness went to Cavaye's assistance and told Brown that he should not strike a man who was in such a condition. Some time later, said witness. Brown assaulted him further up the street, breaking his nose and inflicting a severe cut over his ear. Aj a result witness was under " the doctor for five weeks. Another witness called for the prosecution, said that the fight started near the Post Office and continued "for 15 minutes, eventually finishing about 400 or 500 yards up the street. He considered that Griffiths brought the trouble on himself. Several other witnesses gave evidence for both sides. s Mr. Davis submitted that Griffiths was the aggressor and that he had received a blow from Brown as a result of his interference in what was really 'a private squabble" between Browii and Cavaye. Mr. McKean held that Brown was to blame and fined him £2, and costs, on the charge of fighting and £3, and cost*, on the charge of assault. Half the fine was ordered to go to Griffiths. Cavaye was fined £1 and costs.
