CAMPAIGN IN WHANGAEEI

A raippaign promoted by a local committee is p:t'Ceec!inj» in Whangarei to raise funds for the relief of unemployment. At to-day's meetinsr of the Whancrarei County Council Mr. W. Jonos. M.P., stated that the borough council had power -o contribute, and therefore sought assistance from the roiMity council. A question had arisen wh?ther that local body could legally contribute, but a suggestion was brought forward to guarantee -rork up to £100. This afternoon avenues where unemployed men will he found work in various ridings will be tabulated by riding members, when, if possible, much larger scope than £100 will he forthcoming. Mr. W. Jones. M.P., is telegraphing to the Government with a view to obtaining a subsidy of £ for £ on money raised by private subscription as apart from local body contribution. It was stated to-day that there were 32 mpn on the unemployed list at Whanirarei. A large number have already been p'aced in temporary work. but these relief works are only available to local men in rotation to the exclusion of outside applicants.
