CUSTOMS DUTIES.

DECREASE IN REVENUE. FIGURES FOR MARCH QUARTER. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Thursday. The Customs duties collected in New Zealand during the quarter, which ended on March 31, amounted to £2,055,587, compared with £2,147,084 in the corresponding quarter of 1920. The total for the financial year, 1926-27, is £8,307,040.

Excise duties for the quarter ended March 31, this year, totalled £193,241 compared with £192,302 in the corresponding quarter last year. The total for the 1926-27 finacial year is £729,053. is £729,053.

The principal items of Customs duty in the quarter ended, March 31, 1927, were (figures for the corresponding quarter of 1926 being given in parentheses) :—Spirits, £227,100 (£200,570); cigarettes, tobacco, etc., £340,382 (£343,374); general tariff, £1,238,683 (£1,184,049); British preferential tariff, £702,259 (£832,241); primage, £113,343 (£127,318).

Excise duty includes beer, £101,789 (£165,772).
