EGGS AND POULTRY CHEAPER,

ABUNDANCE OF VEGETABLES

In vie* of the holiday, the auction sales usually held to-day took place yesterday. Much larger quantities of apples were offered, and in consequence prices suffered. Pears too were easier in values. The demand for hothouse grapes improved, the best realising up to 2 BU28 U 2 per Ib. Tree tomatoes are ofterine very freely at present, and bring from 3 6 to 5/ per caee. The shipment of Island oranges per the Waipahi included a fair amount or waste, and repacks are bringing from 24/ to 26/ per case. Current quotations are:— Apples.—Delicious choice, ex cooler, 8/ to 10/ per case; others, f> , to 7G: Jonathans, 6' to If; Patuka and Dougherty, 6 6 to 7/6; second qualitv. from 5/; Rome Beauty, 7/ to 86; Ballarats, 7/6 to 8/6; Washington, 7/6 to S/: second grade cookers, 6/ to 6/6. Pears.—Nelis and Cole?, first grade. 10/ to 11/; others, from 8'; Capiaumont. Bosc, and Keiflers, 6/ to 8/. Tomatoes.—Hothouse. 9d to 1/ per lb; seconds, from sd; outdoor, 3/6 to 12/; Hutt, 7/6 to 10/. Passions, 4/6 to 7/6: Persimmons, 3/6 to 5'6: guavas, 4/ to 7/; grapes, hothouse, best, 2/ to 2/BVi; Sydney, white, 14/ to 16/; bananas, ripe, 14/ to 20/: Island oranges, repacks, 24/ to 26/; Californian, 35/ to 40/; lemons, 5'6 to 12/6; Fiji mandarins, 10 6 to 11/6; cape gooseberries, about 4d. Vegetables. The marts are still heavily supplied with most lines of vegetables, and values run in buyers' favour. The demand is fair, but prices are low. Current rates are:— Potatoes, Southern, 6'3 to 6 9 per ew;t; Kumaras, 3/ to 5/ per bag; pumpkin, ordinary 1/ to 4/ sack, tmmble and grown, 5/ to 7/6 cwt; cabbage, 2/ to o'6 sack; cauliflower, 5/ to 12/ sack; swedes, 1/6 to 2/ bag; citron melons, 5/ to 6/6 cwt; onions, 1/ to 2/6 bag. or 3/ to 5/6 cwt; lettuce, 1/ to 3/ case; celery, 6d to 3/ bundle; rhubarb, 2/ to 3/6 bundle; spinach, 9d to 1/3 dozen; cauliflower, on benches, 3d to lid each; cabbage, on benches, 1/6 to 4/6 dozen; leeks, 3d to 4d bundle; carrots, parsnips, beet, and turnips, 6d to 1/ dozen. Poultry. At yesterday's sale there was an average penning, and values were again lower. Ruling rates were: — Prime cockerels, heavy breeds 6/ to 7/6 each, light 4/ to 5/; cockerels, not prime, heavy 2/6, light 2/6; fat hens, heavy 3/ to 3/9, light 2/6 to 3/; fat roosters, heavy 3/ to 3/6: light, 2/6 to 3/; young ducks, laying, 4/6 to 5/; young drakes, prime, 3/6 to 4/9; old ducks and drakes, 2/6 to 3/6; ducks, not fat, 1/9; pullets, near laying, 7/ to 8/; pullets, smaller, 3/. Eggs and Butter. Supplies of eggs at the marts are increasing, and the price has eased. present values are: Hen eggs, 3/3% to 3/4% per dozen; ducks, 2/8 to 2/9%. Supplies of farmers' batter have been ahort, and the demand is keen. Round pats are bringing from 1/2 to 1/3 for good quality.
