REGISTRATION OF MUSIC TEACHERS
AcerUin section of the t caching profeme has been agitating for tome time to hwi registration of music teachers made lav and U^LT^ri 11 W part ° f tt " v ml* livelihood. There se many a musical nerto* whose income derived from another eouree it not sufficient to live on. Jjuch a perm could not be "registered," although perham be or *he would be more competent to impart knou ledpe than some of those who have menu examination*. I know of several inrtaam where this applies. Of course, the remedv k in the hands of those desiring to be taurit— they surely have enough common wnw ft, know whether they are getting full value for their money and are quite at liberty to chaace their teacher if not satisfied. Another poj«t is if this registration becomes law, then a scale of fee* should also be laid down. At t*e present time, I believe fe«* as charged in Auckland range anywhere from one guinea to six guineas a term, according to tie value the teacher* put on their respective service*. and I have beard of cases where pupils hare become dissatisfied with results obtained from the higher p.iced "professional" teachers, aad derived more benefit from those teaching » a semi-professional way and charging a smaller fee. There, agiin, the remedy -ras in the hand* of the pupils. Another drawback is that quite a lot of people will net be able to get instruction at all because they could never afford to pay the higher charge* of the "professional" teachers. Lest, but not least, I do not think New Zeu landers wish to be different from those in other countries, where those people who are musically inclined are perfectly free to give musical instructioß.
