SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

The open evening of the musical circle of the Lyceum Club will be held next Monday evening, when Dr. K. Phillips, A.R.A.M., will give an interesting musical talk to members and their guests.

An pujoyable five hundred afternoon was by Mrs. Eckett, president 'of the Ellerslie Croquet Club, at Park KoaJ, Ellerslie, for the opening of the new winter season. Afternoon tea and prizes were given, the winners being: Mrs. Woods 1, Mrs. Aitken 2, and the consolation to Mrs. Kingdon.

A bridge afternoon was given at the Mutual Club on Tuesday. The prizes being won by Mrs. Hutter and Alias MeCullagh. There were present Mesdames Owen. Kirk, Savage, Suter, Worthington, Buchanan, Steel. X. Wade. Murray, Wynyard, F. Wilson, Keenan, Hutter, RolxTtscn, Weetman. Keee, Colling. McKen/ic. Sonierville, \"oii .Sturmer.

Tlie Bayswater-Bcluiont Women's Society held an enjoyable evening at the residence of their president, Mrs. F. Gaudin, last night. There was a record attendance of members and their friends. During the evening Fongs were sung by Mi?? F. Gaudin and Mr. Rockeliffe. pianoforte duets were given by Mr. and Mrs. Shirley, and recitations by Miss Barker. Several competitions added to the evening's enjoyment, the prizewinners being Mrs. K. Harrison, Mrs. Thomas, jiinr.. and Mi«s Primrose Maekav.

The Thames Old Gins are making an effort for a mothers' memorial fund, in honour of the diamond jubilee, and the money they collect is to be used for the benefit of the Thames babies in assisting the Pluuket work amongst them. To this end a Brinu and Buy afternoon is being held at St. James' Hall next week, when there will be stalls for produce, sweets, cafces, flowers, aprons, and many articles of both plain and fancy sewing. It is expected that the fund will benefit greatly the proceeds.

A most enjoyable evening was spent in the Victoria League rooms last evening, when the girle of the Ever-ready sub-commim-e. untfer the convenorship of Mrs. L. S. Rickerby. held a gift evening for the members and their friends. There were over 60 girls present, and a large number of beautiful gift* were brought, which will po towards the stall they are taking at Jasper Calders bazaar for the unemployed. A unique idea has been decided upon for the stall. The gifts are to be wrapped in coloured paper to represent oranges, each orange being sold for a nominal sum. During the evening Sister Pat. from the City Mission, spoke about unemployment. Recitations were given by Misses Jordain, Adkin and Mobberley. Competitions, whfch added to the entertainment, were won by Misses Moir, Allen and Prosper.

A pleasant social evening of the Heremai Club for women. «a* hold in the St. .lames' Hall last evening. Dr. Mildred Staley, president, presided. It was preceded by a sale of good?. An excellent programme was arranged by Mrs. Pawson a* follows:—Trio. consisting of 'cello, -axoplmno and piano, by Mr. and Mrs. i'awson and Mr. Ralph Pawjon; eungs (contralto). Mi».» Pauline Rushbrooke ; dances l>y Mioses Edith and Varea Graham; recitations by Messrs. Roberts and Veer: Velio solo by Mr. i'awson; song* i soprano*. Miss M. Sonwrvilte. Kev. V. Lawton ~poke on the Chinese in their own country and in New Zealand. He made a plea for consideration of the characteristic* and their nf>t»d for sympathy in their present trouble.
