THE BUSINESS OF DREDGING. Industrial and commercial enterprises are generally supposed to give a moderate but sure' return on the investment, whereas the popular conception of mining is one of fabulous return or nothing at ail—in other words, a gamble where luck and chance govern all. It has remained tor the dredging of gold to upset this conception, and to demonstrate beyond a question tnat gold dredging is as much a business enterprise as any manufacturing industry, and in addition it has the great advantage of an absolutely unlimited demand for its product. These conditions are found in no other business but that of producing gold—the standard of all values. If the investor will only protect himself by securing the best possible talent in gold dredge engineering before making any heavy commitments, success will he assured, or at least failure averted. For these reasons, gold dredging has attracted widespread attention among investors and business men. There have been many failures in gold-dredging enterprises, and most oi these might have been prevented if the proper steps had been taken in the beginning, for when it is proved that the claim contains payable gold every effort should be made to erect the most powerful modern dredge engineering skill can produce to thoroughly and systematically work the ground at a minimum of cost. There is still too li,ttle tendency to apply to it conservative business methods, such as anyone should apply when contemplating an investment in a manufacturing or contracting business. It is a well-known fact that the Molyneux River below Cromwell had produced tons of gold from its beaches and crevices down to low water mark lone before dredges were ever thought of. Dredging is a comparatively new industry, dating back only about 30 years in this country, and then for a few years it "iust bloomed'" with no systematic development, and their inefficiency to work running streams and deep ground has caused failures, whereas with a proper dredge such as the Hartley and Riley Consolidated Gold Dredging Co.. Ltd.* are having specially designed and constructed for tearing tip the CTevices of; the Molyneux River bed. success would be assured.
