SIR JAMES ALLEN APPOINTED.
FORMER. DEFENCE MINISTER.
ELECTED M.P. FORTY YEARS AGO.

WELLINGTON, Wednesday.
Sir James Allen, formerly High Commissioner for New Zealand in London, has been appointed t« the Legislative Council.
Sir James, who is now 72 years of age, entered political life 40 years ago, when he was elected to the House of Representatives for Dunedin East, defeating Sir Robert Stout, who was then Premier. He held the seat until 1890, and from 1801 until 1920 he represented Bruce. Sir •lames was appointed Minister of Defence in the Massey Government in 1012 and he held office throughout the Great War. He ««s also Minister of Finance, holding both portfolios until 1020, when he resigned from the Ministry to become High Commissioner in London. Sir James Allen was from 1009 to 1012 Chancellor of Otago .University. In his younger days he was a member of the volunteer defence force, and he reached the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 1902.
