The usual pleasantries fallowed and Mr. Kerr suddenly remembered that h* had forgotten to meet a bill for 100.000 francs. Gould Mr. Walker lend it him till the banks opened?
He would hand over as security a leather case containing almost 'the equivalent in English bank notes.
Mr. Walker handed over 70,000 francs and Mr. Doolan, with the case, remained as security. .
Doolan said: "Excuse roe while I buy some ciparettes," and to do so.
Mr. Walker waited three hours but nobody returned. The police explained that Kerr was really a gydneyite, John Ford, who is a notorious confidence trickster.
