Women gained nn important standing in Berlin, when Frau Stadratin Klaru Meye was chosen to represent the Burgermeister during his absence, and also to act as president of the Board of Magistrates. Since it occurred in the largest city in Germany, and it is the first time that a woman has filled the position of Burgorineister, the choice was specially significant.
In Egypt, a women's paper, "Egyptienne," is endeavouring to restore the old status of women, when as in the time of the Puaraohs their position was one of equality. Historians deduce that once married the Egyptian women of old times enjoyed both personal freedom and respect. To-day, the position is otherwise, but modernists arc endeavouring to "bring back yesterday." Among them is Madame Chcniya Hancn Riaz, who was instrumental in passing the law to protect girls from early marriage.
G. B. Stern and her husband are to entertain Noel Coward at their lovely villa in Diano Marina. Noel's many friends continue to marvel at the output he manages to maintain, despite his frequent voyagings over the world. Not long returned from Honolulu, where he had so wonderful a time that I imagine only the production of "La Marquise" lured him back to London town, he is now looking forward with great zest to his Italian visit. For this ultra-sophisti-cated young man retains an enviable boyishness, and a whole-hearted- carefree capacity for getting the very most out of life. It is that gift of concentration which enables him to cram so much intellectual activity into his programme, it is cultivated mainly over morning tea, toast, and honey—in bed. From a nest of cushions, with his breakfast trny on his knees, he dictates his inspirations.
Of the countless compliments Ellen Terry has had paid in her long career, surely one of the most sincerely original was that of the novelist "Charles Reade: "Whatever she does, grace pervades the hussy." There is an affectionate touch about "hussy" that is irresistible!
