LOCAL BODIES' MEETINGS.

TAKAPUNA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the Takapuna Borough Council was held last evening. Present, the Mayor (Mr. J. W. Williameon) and Messrs. A. M. Seaman, J. W. Hayden, G. C. Malcolm, J. Guinevan, J. E. Close, F. Hawes, J. Davis and M. L. Wilkins. Route to the North.—A letter from the East Coast Roading Committee, drawing the council's attention to the refusal of the Main Highways Board and the Minister of Highways to either adequately subsidise the Devonport route to the North or to declare it a Government road, was received. * Inga Road Bridge.—ln reply to the council's request for an extension of the period for the completion of the bridge over the Wairau Estuary at the Inga Road site, the Engineer-in-Chief of the Public Works Department advised that he could not recommend the Minister to extend the period for more than six months. The borough engineer was authorised to interview the Public Works Engineer on the matter. More Pillar Boxes.—A copy of a letter sent to the Chief Postmaster, Auckland, requesting the Department to instal a public telephone box at Milford and four additional pillar boxes, covering Milford, Takapuna and Bayswater, was received from Mr. C. Mackley. Further Speeding.—On the recommendation of the by-laws inspector, it was decided that a warning be sent to the . Land Transport Department of the ' Devonport Ferry Co. re speeding in the borough, and that the inspector be empowered to prosecute in all cases in excess of 30 miles- per hour. Parks Committee.—An offer of seven and three-quarter acres of land for a /public park at the back portion of the Brett Park estate, at £400 per acre waa received ,/rom the Birkdale Land Co. A Bub-committee was appointed to visit the locality, Tree Planting.—lt was decided that tree planting for the year be restricted to the filling in of gaps in the existing areas, and to the planting of shade tree* on the foreshore. '.' Estimates.—A recommendation thai v th e gum o f £280 be placed on the eeti '-. mates for. expenditure on parks wai adopted. It was also decided that th< sum of £75 be added to the estimate; towards the cost of preparing playinj grounds at Park; Smith's Bush.—The council decidec /'that the Mayor should interview th< '- mayors of the adjoining boroughs, an* also the chairman of the Waitemat County Council, with the view of urgin; the Government to take over Smith' * Bosh as a scenic reserve. It was als< decided that the result of the conferenc be forwarded to the director of tow: Fire Fighting.—The superintendent o the fire brigade forwarded an estimate o the requirements of the brigade for th current year, amounting to £500. It ,wa decided that the amount asked ht place oh the estimates. Accounts for; Payment.—Acounts tota ling £4660 were passed for payment. Tramway Surfacing.—The engines . reported that the. sum of £894 woul be necessary to put the tramway trac surfacing into a good condition. It wa decided that the borough solicit r h to takte immediate action i •the matter. Combined Boroughs. Destructor.—Wit reference to the proposed destructor fc the combined .boroughs of Devonpor 2*mUk Birkenhead and

the Devonport Council requested that the work of erection should be commenced as early as possible. It was decided that the matter be deferred, pending legal advice re the Birkenhead Council's present attitude towards the scheme. Unemployment.—An urgent request that the council should give preference to returned soldiers in employment on borough works was received from the Takapona Ex-Service Men's Club. The matter was referred to the favourable consideration of the Works Committee. The' Auckland Returned Soldiers' Asociation asked whether the council would be prepared to give a £ for £ subsidy on a sum of money, ex the Poppy Day funds, to be used to provide work for unemployed ex-eoldiers. The letter was referred to a committee.
