DOMINION TRACK WORK.

METROPOLITAN TRAINING NOTES.

ROYAL. PICTURES SMART TRENTHAM SPRINT.

(By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") WELLINGTON. Tuesday. Birkenella •will leave for Duneriin on Thursday night in charge of P. Mcßrearty. who will ride him in .his encasements at Wlngatui. This morning Birkeuellu did a couple of strong rounds on the sand and appears to hare benefited by bis racing at Egmont and Wanganui. A good solid geldins ou bad ground, and a safe jumper, it will not be surprising to find Birkenella showing up prominently in the South next month. S. Reid will take Nadarino and Indian Sage to Auckland on Monday. This morning at Trentham on the outside of the course proper they separately galloped four furlongs, without being after time. Indian Sage finished in front of Royal Game and Polonaise in SSJs, and Nadarino alone in 555. Both bit out well and now that the tracks are soft they should be able to show their best form. It is eight months since Indian Sage won a race, but he has had a let up and has greatly benefited by it. Nadarino unexpectedly won a race on the second day of the Wairarapa Easter meeting. Indian Sage is a doubtful starter in the Cornwall Handicap at the Auckland winter meeting. A. Goodman has space booked for Black Mint to go to Ellerslie for the Cornwall Handicap. This morning, in company with Modern. Black Mint galloped seven furlongs on the outside of the course proper, although he was holding his companion safely at the finish, the time. 1.381. the last half-mile in just under 575, was not good, by comparison with other gallops, and it did not please his trainer, who is now undecided about making the trip north Probably Black Mint may do better on Thursday or Saturday, but Goodman is afraid he is sickening for a cold. Amongst the horses exercising nt Trentham at present is Kilbronsyth. This good Kilbroney sliding has been under a cloud for some time: He did a couple of rounds oa the sand this morning, but it renin ins to be seen whether he will stand. His less look very doubtful. One of the best track workers at Trentham is the Jocular gelding Garrigallon. This morning he was not troubled to beat Cert and Fulford over half a mile in 535. The English colt. Royal Picture, who is due t.» race-next at Otaki. is now being sent along in his work. This morning he sprinted four furlongs and beat Vexatious in 525. the best gallop of the day from the time point of view. Royal Picture htt out rery well. Vexatious also went well and is looking in good order at present She is to start on the flat at Otaki. Ardfinnan was schooled over the pony hurdles, with D. Butler up. this morning and then went over two of the big hurdles He did not show any great liking for the big jumps, but got over safely. A large number of two-year.olds are now being exercised daily on the Trentham tracks, with occasional short sprints, and if numbers go for anything Trentham stables should have a profitable time during the coming season. A. Quinlivan has returned to Trent ham and has set up as a public trainer He has made a start with the livp ycar-nld geldinWailong (Waimangu— Long Word), a full brother to General Wai.

QUIET MORNING AT RICCARTON. SAYONARAS RACING CAREER ENDED. (By Telegraph.— Special to "Star.") CHRISTCHLRCH, Tuesday. F. P. Claridge returned home from Wellington this morning bringing bnck Mali Jong, whom he purchased from Mr. A J Tut * on : The Comedy King gelding will probably be raced on the flat in the mean, time, but later on he will be seen again among the jumpers. The weather was mild and pleasant for training operations at Riccarton this morning, but there was not much excitement about the work. The number six grass track was open, but most of the galloping was done on the plough, which was in excellent order after a heavy watering overnight. Master Clarence and Hoylake were galloped on the grass this morning. They went six furlongs, going at a sound pace throughout, and finished together after registering 1.16 3-5 for the distance;. TJi«\v look in good order. This was the only gallop on the grass. Radiac <I. Tilson) had Ethiopian <E. Shaw) as a mate in a school over three steeplechase fences this morning. Radiac gave a first-class exhibition of jumping, but Ethiopian, after going well over two obstacles, hit the last one hard. Sayonara (I. Tilson) and Heislcr (G. Pickett) were companions this morning in a turn over the schooling hurdles. Heislcr jumped four flights exceptionally well. Sayonara went well over three, aud then was pulled up. his rider realising that something was wrong. Examination showed that he had broken a bone in bis off hind leg. It is possible that lie will be saved for use as a hack, but his racing career is at an end. which is very unfortunate for his connections, as he was in the best of order, aud looked like "paring "L way during the winter. Tarletou and Beaming were associated in a working gallop over six furlongs.
