THE SOCIAL ROUND

EMPIRE BALL.

A BRILLIANT FUNCTION

The Empire Ball, which for some years past has been held by the Victoria League on Empire Day, and which is the most brilliant ball of the year, was held last evening in the Scots Hall, and was a very delightful dance. The hall had a new scheme of decoration in which flags were used profusely to festoon the walls, and were suspended in streamers from the centre of the ceiling. The shaded lights along the walls were enveloped in Ted sheaths, and the front of the stage was delightfully decorated with masses of red poppies. These were arranged along the border of the foot lights, also in another row a little further back, and lit with scarlet lights, which shed a warm glow over the stage. It was used as a drawinofroom, and arranged as ;i forest scene with tree palms and cabbage palms forming the background, while flax bushes set off the sides. The lounges were also decorated with the same style of colouring. The supper room was delightful, with large vases of scarlet poppies and salvia on the tables, and every window embrasure massed with the same flower. The pillars, too, were all ringed with fern and poppies, the work of a very large and energetic band of ladies, who had been busy all day.
