INCREASED RATES.
PENNY IN THE POUND.
MOUNT EDEN'S DECISION.
PREVENTION OF UNEMPLOYMENT.
The Mount Eden Borough Council decided last evening to increase the rates by a penny in the £1, which will now be 3/8 in the £1, compared with 3/7 last year. It will mean an increased revenue of approximately £1200. The Mayor (Mr. E. H. Potter) pointed out that the hospital levy had increased from £3057 to £5310, or 4§d in the £1, and that the Drainage Board levy had been incfeased by 2fd in the £1. During the past year the council had carried out a big programme of permanent «orks, including drainage and roading, and that had done a great deal towards alleviating the position in regard to unemployment. A revaluation of the district occurred every three years, and an adjustment of the finances would take place next year. Councillors, who supported the decision, agreed that it was necessary that the council staff should be kept going, and that everything possible should be done to prevent unemployment.
