WOMAN'S LIVING TOMB.
NEVER LEFT HER HOUSE FOR 50 YEARS. In a suburb of Birmingham is living a woman who because of a vow, has never left her house for 50 years. She is a widow, who 50 years ago went out one night on an errand and had just reached the street when she saw her husband knocked down and killed by a runaway horse. Grief-stricken, she declared she would never step outside the house again and' she has kept her word. All her food, books, papers, clothes, and other necessaries are obtained by her niece, who lives with her. She has never seen an aeroplane except in photographs. The cinema is only a name to her. and the only motor cars she has seen have been those which have passed along th« quiet street where she lives. "I don't think my aunt will ever break her vownow," her niece said in an interview. "She is really wonderfully happy, and doesn't miss all the modern pleasures because she has never known them. "She keeps in touch with the world through books and papers, and often surprises me with the amount of knowledge she has gleaned."
