TROTTING.

WHEEL AND TRACK NOTES.

(Bv ORION.) SEASON'S FIXTURES. May 21.—Oamaru Trotting Club. June S, 4.—Canterbury Park Trotting Club. June 18, 22.—Auckland Trotting Club. The death occurred on Friday of Mr. J. Duffy, the -well-known Southland sportsman, who bred Native Chief, Logan Chief, and other good performers. Bawldy Locanda is at present enjoying himself in a paddock. Later on he will be brought in and joined up with the active members of T. Roe's team at Mangere. For the two days' winter meeting of the Auckland Trotting Club, which takes place on June 18 and 22, the club will distribute £6700 in prize money. The big handicap each day will carry £1000, and another good race is the Adams Memorial, which has a money prize of £500 and a gold cup, valued at 100 guineas. The smallest stake attached to any event i. £300. Nominations do not close till June 2, but in the meantime owners should give the programme careful study as the stakes are solid and well worth winning. When the present season had not been long in swing the Mangere ownertrainer, A. Cameron, was early included among the winners, and he won with Gaza, Jean Darling, and Aggie Bell. Jean Darling went on with her form and raced well at all meetings at which she competed, but both Gaza and Aggie Bell failed to keep in winning vein. Aggie Bell is not solid, and though she displayf. plenty of pace she is liable to leave her feet for no reason at all. Gaza in gome quarters, was boomed as a champion, but the son of Our Thorpe showed at Cambridge that he is only a moderate and not nearly so good as many thought him. With the present season drawing to a close in Auckland, the time is opportune for the North Island Owners and Breeders' Asociation to meet, that is if the body is still in existence. There are many matters in which the association could interest itself, more particularly as the numerous clubs will shortly be considering their programmes for next season. Nobody knows better than trainers and owners what the limits should be to get the best racing, and suggestions could be made to country clubs which would be appreciated. Again the matter of arranging for accommodation, the transport of horses to away from home meetings, and such matters are important items upon which the association could possibly make recommendations. However, the first step is to get together and review the season. Out of the discussion are bound to come matters which are open to improvement. RECORDS TO TWO-YEAR-OLDS. Public records were given to five two-year-olds and eight three-year-olds at Macon on March 26, says' a New York writer. Evensong was the star performer. Crozier let her trot a mile in 2.14 1-4 against the watch and might have marked her in 2.12 if he had driven her out, so the horsemen present averred. Other two-years-olds that took records were Crozier's bay filly Vespers, 2.22 1-4, by Guy Axworthy, out of Lorena Watts, 2 ; 16 1-4, by General Watts; Berry's Khediva Dillon, 2.25 1-4, by Dillon Axworthy, 2.10 1-4, out of Czarevna, 2.7 3-4s, by Peter the Great; Miss Bertha Worthy,! 2.26 1-4, by Lee Worthy, 2.2 l-4s, out of Miss Bertha Dillon, 2.2 l-4s, by Dillon Axworthy, and Stevens' Dillon, 2.29 1-4, by Dillon Axworthy, out of Madam Peters by Peter the Great.

Sandy Flash, 2.14 1-4, by Peter Volo, 2.2, out of Miss Bertha Dillon, was the fastest of tlic three-year-olds marked Roma Dillon, the sister to Stevens Dillon, took a record of 2.17 1-4, and Micro Dillon, the sister to Khediva Dillon, a mark of 2.18 1-4. The breeding of the youngsters, one and all, is quite as notable as their performances, every one of them being a descendant of Axworthy, 2.15 1-2, while several are closely inbred to that remarkable sire.

DEATH OP BINGARA. The trotting stallion Bingara, which died recently in Orange County, at the age of 26, exemplified a type of sires whose day is past. He was one of the most faultlessly formed sons of the superb Bingen, and his offspring were uniformly good looking. More than two.hundred of them gained public trotting records of 2.30 or better. Peter the Great, 2.75, and Guy Axworthy, 2.8 3s, are perhaps the 'only sires that ever excelled this showing. But 2.30 trotters win no races nowadays. Few that fail to trot in 2.10 can earn enough to pay for breeding, developing and campaigning them, while the ones worth owning are those that train on to trot in 2.5 or that ehow early speed enough to have a chance for the big futurities and sweepstakes for two-year-olds and three-year-olds. Bingara got few trotters of these classes. Out of 209 in the 2.30 list, only eighteen trained on to trot in 2.10, and but one of those reached 2.5. No two-year-old by him ever gained a record of 2.10, says an American authority, and I can recall no three-year-old, excepting Bin volo, 2.9 J, that did so, nor any colt that ever won a futurity, though Bisa, Binvolo and Belvasia performed creditably in such races.

Compare his achievements as a sire with those of Guy Axworthy, 2.10}, or Bel win, and one readily sees why Bingam brought only 5200 dollars at auction in 1916 when at the height of his stud career, and why he was neglected thereafter by progressive breeders. Dillon Axworthy, foaled nine years later than Bingara, is the sire of 99 trotters in the 2.30 list, and of these 31 have trotted in 2.10, and eight have trotted in 2.5, while eleven were in the 2.10 list at two years old. Guy Axworthy, one year younger than Bingara, is credited with 2.18 in the 2.30 list, and of these 54 are in the 2.10 list; fourteen are in the 2.5 list and three in the two minute list. ICine of his 2.10 trotters entered the list as two-year-olds. Bel win, foaled in 1910, now has 107 in the 2.30 list, 51 in the 2.10 list, fourteen of them having entered as two-year-olds, and eleven in the 2.5 list.

Bingara's failure as a sire of early and extreme speed is remarkable in view of the fact that his own sire, Bingen, was the fastest two-year-old of his day, and Arion, 2.7J, the sire of his dam, made a record at that age which remained unbeaten almost twenty years.
