SOCIAL GATHERINGS.
The Civic League intends holding a social at the Priscilla Tea Rooms next week, as a welcome and to honour Miss Basten, a former president, who has been elected to a seat on the City Council. Miss Basten has always taken a keen Interest in municipal politics from ft woman's point of view. • • • • A delightful birthday party was given by Mrs. F. Hawthorne Pope, on Saturday afternoon, for her daughter, Valerie. All sorts of games, competitions and dancing were indulged irtt Birthday favours were placed in each of the littla guests' seats at the tea table, which was beautifully decorated in all shades of pink and gold. • • • • Mrs. Coates is accompanying the Prime Minister on his Northern tour. Last night she was on the platform in the Empire Theatre, Dargaville, when Mr. Coates delivered his pre-sessional speech. At the opening a little girl pre sented Mrs. Coates with' a bouquet of beautiful autumn blooms and maiden- ' hair fern as she took her seat. The child > was rewarded with a motherly squeeze and a kiss from the Prime Minister's wife. 'k * -Sr # An enjoyable afternoon was spent on Saturday last, when Miss Margery McColl, Greenwood's Corner, gave a kitchen afternoon to Miss Emily Hadfield, who is shortly to be married. The • rooms were prettily decorated with chrysanthemums. Competitions were held, the winners being Miss Hood, Miss Ine Abdullah and Miss Alva Payne. Amongst those present were Mesdames Hadfield, Hipworth, Jones and Rout, and the Misses May Lamb, Winnie Meikle, Gwen. Scmitt, Isabel Isemonger, and Joyce and Elneth Wright. • * • • On Saturday afternoon Mesdames C. E. Hardley and Venters entertained the members of the Ponsonby Croquet Club at a card party in the West End Bowling Club paviiion, which was lent for the occasion. Bridge and five hundred were played, and the prizes were won by:—Bridge: Mrs. Gallaher and Mrs. Buckle; consolation, Mrs. Crowe. Five hundred: Mrs. W. F. Hardley and Mrs.; Downes;; consolation, Mrs. T. Chap- j man. A pleasant afternoon was spent, I and a most delightful afternoon tea was provided by the hostesses. Mrs. Worsfold (president), on behalf of the club, thanked Mesdames Hardley and Venters for their hospitality. ENGAGEMENTS ANNOUNCED The engagement is announced of Isobel, youngest daughter of the late William and Mrs. Blair, Queensland, to Roy, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Cryer, Wharepoa, Thames, late of Northcote.
