THE FERTILE CLUTHA.
SUITABLE FOR BEET. Speaking in favour of the establishment of the beet-growing industry in the Clutha district recently, Mr. Alex Reid, formerly manager of Clifton Estate, Waiwera, said that in Scotland, where beet-growing was being successfully carried on, the best crops of turnips he had seen went 40 tons to the acre, whereas Mr. Bell, of Stirling, Clutha, had as much as 80 tons to the •ere. , Another speaker averred that at Inchclutha he had seen a crop of 84 tons to the acre, and up to 90 tons had been grown in that district.
