Mr. and Mrs. T. McDowell, Eruen Street, have left on a-visit to Russell Bay of Islands. Miss Matthews and Mr M. Matthews, who have been staying i: Rotorua, have left for Auckland, ei route to-Sydney. At the Peerless Hall on Friday evening a most delightful children's fancy dress dance was held under the auspices of the Rotorua Women's Club, in aid of the Rotorua Girl Guides. The hall was gaily decorated with streamers of mauve and yellow, and there was a large attendance. Hunter's Orchestra rendered excellent music, and between the dances games were played. Many attractive fancy. costumes were worn, and the judges were Mesdames A. G. Holland, J. D. Davys, D. Jervis and Mr. J. H. Halkett. junr., who awarded the prizes, which were then presented by Mr. F. F. Hockly, M.P., to the following:—Girls' most original costume, Eileen Woods, as "No More Strikes"; boys' original costume, Sydney Corbett, as an Eastern Lady; prettiest costume, Barbara Williams, as "Bubbles"; Girl Guides, Mona Worrall 1. Olive Howdcn 2; Brownies, Olive Harris 1, Ella MeCotmick 2, Ruth Holland 3; Boy Scouts, John Kinnimont 1, Frank Clubb 2; special prize, Melva Matthews, as Chinaman. A dainty supper was served by the committee of the Women's Club, the adults then continued the dancing until 4 late hour. * Striking frocks were worn by:-rßaby Johneon, butterfly; Jean McLean, "Buy Britten Goods"; I. Isedale, Eastern lady; Valeria Garnahan, "Oak" preserves;. Emily Allen, Scots lassie; Eileen Woods, "No More Strikes"; Myrtle Hughes, milkmaid; Hazel McCauley, Chinaman, Melva Matthews, Chinaman; B. Williams "Bubbles"; Mona McLean, carnival; Syd. Corbett, Eastern, lady. At St. John's Hall on Friday a charming "gift evening" was given by the combined choir, Sunday school and Bible class of St. John's" Presbyterian Church, Rotorua, in honour of Miss May Woolliams, who is to be married shortly. Many beautiful and useful gifts were received. Beautiful speeches were made by the Rev. A. C. Eanderson and Mr. Gainsford, superintendent of the Sunday school, and Mr. Randerson, on behalf of the Sunday school, then presented Miss Wooliams with a salad set, and little Miss Shirley Wood presented her with a bouquet of salmon pink and cream roses. Two competitions were held, one

being won by Miss Maude, and the other by a team of 20. During the evening a vocal duet was sung by Misses E. Murray and D. Davies, a pianoforte solo by Miss M. Quinn, and a dialogue by Misses Grace Gordon and T. Johnson. The stage, where a sumptuous sit-down supper was served, was most effectively arranged with bowls of salmon pink roses, while the decorations of the supper tables were in gold and salmon pink kewpies, horseshoes and streamers, and each guest received a golden lucky favour.
