"EMPLOYMENT GUARANTEED"

MISLEADING ADVERTISEMENTS

TO INTENDING MIGRANTS.

From time to time, complaint has been made by immigrants after arrival in New Zealand that they were misled by advertisements in the Home newspapers and given to understand that they would have no difficulty in obtaining employment after arrival in the Dominion. It seems that immigrants who arrive here may have a legitimate grievance should they be unable to obtain wock, for as recently as March 12 last, advertisements of the following kind appeared in "The People's Journal," published at Aberdeen, Scotland. One advertisement reads: . "Farm servants (experienced) wanted for New Zealand; reduced fares, nothing to pay; employment guaranteed by New Zealand Government." A second advertisement states: "Experienced domestic servants wanted for New Zealand. Free passages, nothing to pay, situations guaranteed by New Zealand' Government." A third advertisement is an invitation to experienced farm workers to migrate, and again it is stressed that work is <ruaranteed by the New Zealand Government. From the above advertisement is will be seen that intending emigrants, to New Zealand are led to believe that the New Zealand Government will have employment readv for them when they arrive in New Zealand, although it is not so, and some disillusioned immigrants have already discovered it to their cost. A striking commentary ig the fact that the official figures of the Auckland branch of the Labour Department, issued at noon on Saturday, showed that there were 629-men out of work in Auckland. This list does not include returned soldiers or employees in the engineering trade, for which separate registers are kept. At the moment there are probably over a thousand men seeking work in Auckland alone.
