HAWKER SENT TO GAOL
REFUSED TO LEAVE.
UNTIL HE SOLD SOMETHING. William Brighting (49), who has St. Vitus dance, but no license from- the City Council to hawk goods, was consigned to prison for three months by' Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., this morning for] being an idle and disorderly person, with! insufficient lawful means of support. Brighting was described by Senior Sergeant Edwards as a tinware hawker.' The City Council would not issue him a license and accused persisted in his calling. He would cat! at houses and would not take no for an answer. Whenever the lady of the house would say "nothing to-day, thank you," Brighting would place his foot between the door and drop his tinware. He would not go away until he had sold something. Women were frightened by Brighting's manner and .is unfortunate affliction. Several charges of hawking without a license were {.ending. He had been before the Court many times previously.
"Three months , imprisonment, that's al! 1 can do with him," said Mr. Hunt. "We will not worry about him hawking without a license."
