Minister of Finance that the Statu Advances Department was about six months in arrears in granting loans for houses, but the -position is apparently worse than ever at the moment, for the State Advances Board is only now dealing with reports, on applications mado prior to August, 1920. "Tlio reply which I received yesterday gives less hoj>e than ever to those concerned," said'.Mr. Jordan to a reporter. "There is no indication as to when the later applications will be dealt with. Downie Stewart to expedito the granting of loans for houses, so that tlio supply of homes might be more adequate, and more work provided for those engaged iu the building and timber trades. A fortnight ago I wrote to the Minister drawing his attention to the fact that a large number of applications, lodged during April, May and June of 1920, had yet to be dealt with, and that tlio State Advances. Department was unable to give oven, the approximate dates on which they would receive attention. X pointed out also that many builders were without work for themselves or their staffs.. "In his reply, the Minister says he has communicated with the State Advances Superintendent, who has assured him that the State Advances Board continues to deal with applications for loans as expeditiously' as possible, lieports have Iwen .received in respect of all applications' made prior to August last.
