TAKAPUNA RATES.
AW UNAVOIDABLE INCREASE. LOWER RATES IN 1929. An explanation of the financial position of the borough of Takapuna was given last night by Mr. A. M. Gould, when he addressed a meeting of the Mil - ford Progressive Association. By reason of the commitments taken pver by the new council from its predecessors an increase in the rates could not be avoided. The rates had to go up from 26/ per £100 to 33/. The council would be compelled to cut down its loan expenditure. It seemed to Mr. Gould that the limit of the loan expenditure for the present year was not more, than £25,000 or £30,000. If this were exceeded there would be a further increase in the. rates next year. Even in 1928 it would not be possible to reduce the rates, but a reduction might be looked for in 1929 if the council guarded the public funds judiciously, and kept expenditure within the limit of the increased rate-revenue from new buildings.
