LOCAL BODIES.

MOUNT EDEN. Ths Mt. Eden Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor (Mr. E. H. Potter), presiding. Programme of Work.—The Mayor congratulated the councillors on their return to office. He said that during the past year the council had carried out an extensive programme of work, inclusive of a drainage scheme. It had been completed as far as Balmoral Boad, work in the southern zone was proceeding, and it would be continued until completed. A big scheme of improvements of streets in concrete or bitumen had been gone on with, and it also would be continued until completion. Cr. Smith said that the return of all the councillors showed the confidence of the ratepayers in the council. Cr. Bryden said that the council would now be in a position to continue its progressive policy, and the rates would automatically come Uovrn as the years went by. St. Leonard's Road Drainage.—The engineer reported that residents of St. Leonard's Road had complained of a nuisance caused by the overflow of sewage from the City Council sewage system in that locality. He said that the position was aggravated by storm water spreading the sewage over a considerable area. He suggested that the Health Department should be notified and asked to take action.—lt was decided to refer the matter to the Works Committee, and to investigate the complaint. Baimoral Road. —The engineer reported that the concrete centre of Balmoral Road had been satisfactorily completed. ONEHUNGA BOROUGH COUNCIL. The first meeting of the new elected Mayor and council was held last night, when there were present Messrs. W. C. Coldicutt (Mayor), H. A. Stoupe. H. Campley, J. Carlton, W. C. HiU, R. G. Speight, T. S. Laniont, T. Moor, and E. Morton. Leave of Absence.—On the motion of the Mayor, Mr. P. R. Lipseombe's application for one month's leave of absence was granted. Deputy Mayor.—Mr. E. Morton was appointed Deputy Mayor. Committees.—The following committees were set up: Finance, the Mayor and Messrs. R. G. Speight, T. Moor, E. ; Morton; Streets, Building, and Drainage, Messrs. E. Morton, H. Campley, H. A. Stoupe. and J. Carlton; Librarv, Messrs. . R. G. Speight, H. A. Stoupe, H. Campling, and Messrs T. Bassett, H. j. Davies, and C. A. Osborne representing the citizens. Downie Stewart) has con- ' sented to exempt from the operation of the Local Government Loans Board Act, 1 the council's proposal to raise £2500 for a \ refuse destructor and £6000 for drainage. • The ratepayers sanctioned the raising of I the first-named loan on April 27, but ► rejected the second. , Hospital Rate.—ln view of the ainalaga- ' mation of a portion of the One Tree Hill ', Road district with Onehunga, taking effect as from April 1 last, the levy made by the Hospital Board on the Road Board > will have to be adjusted and a portion paid £ by Onehunga. The Hospital Board will not 5 make the alteration, but states that any ad- - justment must be made between the local r bodies concerned. As far as can be ascer--1 tained by the Road Board at present, the amount of the levy for the area concerned will be about £180. This information was ! * received from the One Tree Hill Road 3 Board. The Hospital Board has informed ', the council that the hospital levy for s Onehunga this year will be £2536 6/4. The Mayor said this was about £1200 more . than last year. The increase was owing to q the increase in the valuation made last year, and also to the enlargement of the borough by the inclusion of a portion of e the One Tree Hill district. e A Deputation.—Some of the ratepayers s of that portion of One Tree Hill recently J brought into the borough are desirious of. a meeting the council to discuss certain loans affecting them. A petition that a deputation be received by the council for that purpose was read and agreed to. r Fire Plugs.—A legal opinion was e received from Mr. T. S. Martin, solicitor ? to the Xew Zealand Municipal Association, f to the effect that it is tlij duty of the . council to keep the fire plugs in the 2 borough in order and clear of weeds, and also to keep the indication marks clearly legible. S. 3 Lamont on the Transport Control Comt mittee. Odour of Sulphur.—Tt was decided, on j the motion of Mr. R. G. Speight, seconded by Mr. T.
