BOOKMAKERS' CLIENTS.
DANNEVIRKE MAN FINED. SEQUEL TO WHITTA CASE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DANNEVIRKE, Monday. Two cases arising out of a recent police raid on premises occupied by Alfred Vivian Whitta, at Christchurch, were heard before Mr. S. L. P. Free, S.M., in the Dannevirke Police Court to-day. Percy John Barton admitted betting with Whitta on February 8. The police said that, as the result of the raid in Christchurch certain documents were seized by the police. Among them was one which went to show that defendant had bet with the bookmaker. When interviewed by the .police-'defen-dant readily admitted it. Mr. Biakiston, for Barton, said the latter was a blacksmith in a small way, a widower with eight children, and had made a bet apparently with the idea of augmenting his income. Counsel asked for a light penalty. The magistrate said he did not know of any more illusory way of adding to one's income than by betting on horse racing. Defendant was liable to a penalty of £100. As this was the first case of its kind in the district he would fine defendant £5 and costs 10/. Kenneth Matheson, who was similarly charged, was also fined £5 and costs.
