HOCKEY.

ST. LUKE'S GREAT FIGHT.

DRAW WITH 'VARSITY.

SOMERVILLE AND ARETA PILE ON

GOALS,

The second series of championship matches under the auspices of the Auckland Hockey Association were decided at the Remuera grounds on Saturday. The star attraction was the meeting of St. Luke's and University, and the tense struggle that ensued fully bore out expectations. A lucky goal to each team mad© a drawn game, although on the run of play University had the best of matters. It was the wonderfully stubborn defence of the St. Luke's backs that so withheld the slioc-k assaults of the students. This game completely overshadowed the other two matches. Somerville had decidedly the best of Mount Eden and scored a 5 goals to 1 win, while Areta were seen to advantage by defeating Wesley bv G goals to 1.

AN EXCITING DRAW,

St. Luke's got the best of the opening stages in their game against University and free hitting among the forwards forced the students' defence. Up to halftime, however, the students attacked consistently without being able to score. The students came down with a sudden attack, and as Hamilton tried to shoot Hanna ran out and kicked clear early in the second spell. A free hit further relieved St. Luke's, who made a dash to the students' twenty-five. Sharp attacks by the students followed, but St. Luke's defence remained intact. Another free to St. Luke's was intercepted, and the students forced -the attack. Hannan saved brilliantly, and Hookhani securing took play to the fifty line. The students again rushed the circle, a penalty corner followed but proved fruitless. A rally by St. Luke's reached the circle, but Hume saved, and Dr. Leonard set his vanguard attacking. Suddenly Hookham secured and ran to the circle. Steen saved, but St. Luke's were quickly back again, and a shot rebounding off the post was taken .-by Giles who netted. St. Luke's 1, University 0. Vigorous attacks by both teams followed, till University, headed by Burton, made for the net. and in a scramble Hhnna kicked clear. Still the blues persisted without result, and then St. Luke's took up the attack. The students then made determined efforts, and amidst excitement Seelan equalised scores. The students still pressed and time was called. St. Luke's 1 University 1

MOUNT EDEN OUTPLAYED. At the start Mount Eden assumed the offensive against Somerville, but a couple of free hits and a break by E. Watts saw play changed to the other end. Somerville maintained the pressure and Vail stopped a shot from E. Watts at short range. From the ensuing corner C. Watts found the net. Somerville were again goal hunting, and were awarded a penalty goal. The Somerville forwards made several further invasions. Vail stopping a couple of shots bwt H. Watts did the trick. From one of their few attacks during the spell, the outcome of a run by Fletcher, Kelly scored, the ball grazing the post. • Play was in favour of Somerville in the opening stages of the second spell, and after several fruitless attempts C. Watts did the trick from a corner with a beautiful shot. A run by H. Watts and a one-hand storke gave E. Watts a chance in front of the goal, and the game ; ended in a win for Somerville by 5 goals to 1.

ARETA'S DASHING GAME. Areta played a forcing game throughout against Wesley and led 4—l at half-time. Pitt scoring Wesley's only goal. Anthony, who was most prominent of the Areta vanguard, goaled on three occasions, one of his shots being spectacular. The ball was lobbed across the circle and, catching it on the bounce, he sent in with a fine reverse shot to the net. Much of the Areta forward work was attractive and showed a much-improved standard. Wesley failed to make many of their rushes tell against the Areta backs, and they were repulsed' by Davis lonehanded on a number of occasions. .T. Carter netted twice and Rybers once, giving Areta the victory by 6 goals to 1.

SOMERVILLE V. 'VARSITY. In the senior B grade the Somerville team scored an easy victory over University by 6 goals to t. In the first hair Preston, Gregson. Sawyers and Lee each goaled for Somerville and Taylor scored the only goal for the students. Lee added two more goals for the winners in the second hair. TRAINING COLLEGE V. EPIPHANY. Training College easily had the advantage in their game against Epiphany, and the standard of play among the Students was a marked improvement on their performance on the opening day of the season. At the end of the first spell they led. 4—nil, Tizard and Wotherspoon having scored two goals each.
