SOCCER GAMES.

KEEN STRUGGLES.

THISTLE AND SHORE UNBEATEN.

TRAMWAYS DROP MORE POINTS,

The third Saturday of the Soccer senior competition was featured by the gomewhat surprise win of Ponsonby over Tramways, after a hard and fast struggle, and the close result of the North Shore v. Onehunga match at Devonport. Though the scor© in the latter game was I—o1 —0 for the undefeated Shore, the run of the play was not nearly so close and Onehunga have to thank a phenomenal display of goalkeeping by McPhee for the low scoring. The custodian saved time and time again. Ponsonby gave a convincing display against Tramways, and although the only goal scored was a penalty, on the run of the game the score fairly represented the play. Thistle had to play hard throughout to win over Navy, who were a little unlucky at times, and on the Domain Y.M.C.A. turned a reverse to a win by determined effort.

The results of the senior games were: Ponsonby 1 Tramways ... 0 Thistle 3 Navy Depot .. 1 North Shore ...« 1 Onehunga .... 0 Y.M.C.A 3 Nortlicote .... 2 POSITIONS OF THE TEAMS. The championship positions of the senior teams to date are: —

PONSONBY WIN BY A PENALTY.

In a keen tussle Ponsonby beat Tramways by the only goal of the match. Play as lively and evenly contested throughout the first half, and there were many thrills. O'Brien beaded out a ground shot from Dodds, Tramway's inside right, who made a noteworthy first appearance for the season, and at the other end Batty had to run out and clear from a crowd of opponents. Spencer struck the crossbar with a great drive which had the Ponsonby keeper beaten all the way and missing a melee' in the Tramway's goal. Booth, presented with an open goal, shot over. Near the interval Watson was penalised and from the penalty, at the second attempt, Innes scored. He missed at first, but the kick was retaken as a Tramway player had stepped over the line. This was the only score. In the second half Tramways were awarded a penalty, but Spencer shot straight at Jack, who had no difficulty in clearing. The Tramways were slighty superior In this half. Final: — Ponsonby 1 Tramways O THISTLE'S THIRD WIN. Thistle within five minutes opened scoring against the Navy and won by 3—l, but only after a hard game. Their first goal was a lucky one, a shot from Kay rebounding off one of the backs Into the net. For some minutes the Navy pressed and Pitcher equalised. , Play was even and both custodians bad to save twice; Thistle went •head as the result of clever work by Carter, Dunsmore, Hislop and Stewart, the latter beating the Jiavy goal-keeper all the way with a fast drive. In the early stages of the second half the Navymen were the more aggressive, and Giles and Hiles put in dangerous headers. Later it was more evenly contested. Christie put Hislop away and he passed to Kay, who beat Eacock, the goal-keeper misjudging the shot. Pinal: — Thirtle .. .• 8 Navy Depot . 1

ONEHUNGA SOUNDLY BEATEN. North Shore beat Onehunga I—o at Devonport and so kept up their winning run. They were vastly superior to the visitors, who had a rearranged team, and only the excellent work of McPhee.- in goal, prevented them winning by a much larger margin. The home team were aggressive three-quarters of the time, and all their forwards and halves bad pops at goal. Most of the shots, however, went straight at the goal-keeper, who kept bia charge nnpierced, two occasions excepted. One was five minutes before the interval, when Whitley beat him from an off-side position, the point being immediately disallowed, and the other was when Woolley pnt throneh the winning goal. Onehunga, in the later stages of the game played with better combination, and were dangerous on several occasions, but. they seldom troubled the custodian. Result:—i North Shore 1 Onehunga 0

Y.M.C.A. BALLY TO WIN. After being one goal down at the interval, Y.M.C.A. rallied, and in the second outplayed Northcote, to win by 3 —2. In a melee in Northcote's goal-mouth, Lyon was lucky to score. After even play, Northcote attacked, and Hall beat Lewis and scored. A pot shot from Xurr was brilliantly saved by the North cote keeper. Goals were plentiful in the second half, when play was fast. Darby, from a centre by Tremain, put Northcote further ahead, but from a penalty kick Y.M. lessened the advantage, and then, in' quick succession. Sale and Hoban scored with fine shots. Final scores :— 3 Northcote -
