"A FEW BEERS IN."

AND BROKE A WINDOW.

maws unzxplaihed act.

DAMAGE IN VICTORIA STREET.

A crashing of glass brought the occupants of a Victoria Street shop to the street at 3.50 on Saturday afternoon.'

"He did .it," said a passer-by to the owner of the shop, pointing to Edward Friday (53).

"Don't go for a policeman, I'll go myself," said the obliging Edward. Bat just then two. constables came on the stone and ushered Priday to the lockup. As a result, Priday found himself at the Police Court this morning charged with committing mischief by wilfully damaging a pane of glass to the extent of *10.

Priday was very reticent and did not plead either way. Constable Du Temple showed the magistrate a manuka stick about 2ft 6in long and nearly three inches thick. This, he said, was thrown through the window and landed on the counter of the ahop inside. A pair of boots had been damaged by broken glass. Priday admitted breaking the window, but offered no explanation. He had a few beers in, but was not drunk.

"What are you, are you married or single" asked Mr. Bunt.

Priday mumbled that he was a single man and an engine -driver at present working on the wharf. "What did you break the window for?" further inquired the magistrate. "I think it was an accident," said accused. "I was swinging the stick round in my hand and it just went through."

"Where did you get the stick!" "I picked it up on the footpath. "Well, you will have to pay for the window, you will be fined £2, or seven days' imprisonment, and will be ordered to pay £10 for a new window, and £1 damage to the boots at the rate of £2 per week," said Mr. Hunt "And if you don't pay, you'll go in."
