ALLIES RETALIATE.
OPEN WARFARE IN YANGTSE. Foreign Ships Run a Gauntlet of Mixed Fire. OPPOSING FACTIONS ENTRENCHED ON BANKS. DAMAGE BELIEVED TO BE TREMENDOUS. Serious conditions prevail on the Yangtse River between Pukow and Nanking, where open warfare exists between opposing Chinese factions on each side of the liver. The waterway is swept by rifle and machine-gun fire, and it is reported that foreign vessels have been deliberately fired on. Warships of the different foreign Powers have replied, while Chinese warships have also fired on the land defences, the damage by the shelling being believed to be tremendous.
