A GIGANTIC HENCOOP.
6000 MILES OF BARBED WIRE
SHANGHAI, April S,
It barbed wire used in the International Settlement barricades were stretched out it would reach half-way between New Zealand and London. In addition to these 0000 miles of wire the authorities used over 1.000,000 staple*, 40.000 stakes and 300,000 sandbags, with another 000,000 waiting ready at Hongkong.
The settlement, with a double impregnable barbed wire barricade, running two miles down the Avenuo Edward VII., separating it from the French is already taking on the appearance of a gigantic chicken coop.
Strangely the coolies, who, being the most ignorant, aro therefore the easiest stirred up as a class, are singing and working merrily, digging now holes mid putting up more barbed wire, through which in a few days the agitators may be persuading them to vainly try to brca k.
