AGAIN DEFERRED.

THE CIVIC SQUARE. TREATMENT OF SITE. COUNCIL MARK TIME. The suggestcd schemes for the utilisation of the Civic .Square were referred to nt a meeting of the City Council an Thursday night by the chief traffic inspector (Mr. G. Hogani, who said that the most important feature in connection with the lay-out of the area was ample provision for present and future traffic requirements. He was of the opinion that it was essential that a roadway, 130 feet wide, should run through at the back of the area from Welle-lcy Street West to Cook Street, and while this might appear to be an excessive space, there was no question that within the next five years it would be needed for passenger transport purposes, particularly in view of the fact that from the area all transportation would radiate; also if council did not avail itself of the opportunity, the erection of bnildingss on extended leases would make it impossible to make provision later on. He understood that it was not the tramways department's intention at present to utilise the Market Square, but there was a posibility that in some years to come the department might find it necessary to use a portion of the roadway; and there was also the possibility that the council might find it nece«sary to create new roadways from the area. The Mayor moved that the report he referred to the Park and Works Committee. Mr. A. J. Knfrican considered that the proposals were not satisfactory, and asked if the engineer could give them something else. Mr. L. A. Kady suggested that they should reach some decision rejrardinjj the treatment of the site, so that thev could leave it to the new council to make any modifications. He said that the proposal would leave the matter "in the air."' Mr. J. A. C. Alliim said that the proposal was evervthing that thev could do. Mr. M. Bennett said that it was not suggested that they could come to any decision that Both schemes were worthy of consideration.

The motion was carried
