LIQUOR SOLD ON SUNDAY.
?ARTT AT RAGLAN HOTEL. UNUSUAL DEFENCE RAISED. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON, Thursday. The licensee of the Royal Hotel, Raglan. S. Darnell, was charged at the Police Court yesterday with opening his premises for the sale of liquor on Sunday, and with supplying liquor on a Sunday. His wife, Florence Norah Darnell, was also charged with supplying liquor on a Sunday.
Twelve men were charged with being found on the licensed premises of the Royal Hotel, Raglan, without lawful excuse.
The case arose from the visit to Raglan of a number of Cambridge residents.
It was stated by the defending counsel that the party discussed the question of staying the night at Raglan, and they entered the hotel with the intention of staying. Eventually they decided not to stay.
Three of the men were fined £1 each and the others 10/ each.
Mrs. Darnell said that when the partyarrived one of the men arranged for meals and accommodation for the nifht. Then he asked for liquor, which was provided. After the evening meal the man intimated that the party was not going to stay for the night.
The licensee denied that he supplied ihe party with liquor, although he knew nis wife had done so.
The magistrate reserved his decision. i
