RANSACKED.
LARGE MT. ALBERT HOUSE
SYSTEMATIC SEARCH MADE
SOME JEWELLERY STOLEX,
A large house known as Moeraki, in Allendale Road, Mount Albert, was thoroughly and systematically ransacked by burglars on Thursday night.
Mrs. Nicholls and her family left on Thursday afternoon to spend the Easter holidays at Howiek, after securely lock ing up the premises. Yesterday afternoon Doctor Gladys Montgomery, a friend of Mis. Nicholls, called, and was in the garden picking some flowers when she noticed that a side window was open. She thought it strange, as she knew that the occupants were away on holiday, so she peered in through the window and then noticed piles of clothing and various articles heaped up on the floor. The police were immediately notified, and also Mrs. Nicholls, who returned from Howiek this morning.
When a "Star" reporter was shown over the house this morning it presented an extraordinary appearance. In every room on the middle of the floor was a pile of miscellaneous articles. Drawers had been pulled out and the contents scattered about. It was quite evident that the burglars were in search of money, tor they did not bother to remove some valuable silverware from the sideboard in the dining room. Until Mrs. Nicholls make:a close examination of her property it will bo impossible for her to ascertain exactly what is missing. However, she does know that several articles of jewellery, worth little to the burglars, but much to Mrs. Nicholls, as they were keepsakes, were taken away. Although the intruders thoroughly searched a small ■writing desk in one room, they overlooked a roll of notes which was wrapped up ill tissue paper. They gained entrance by a side window and left by the backdoor, which they left wide open. The key of the door was stolen.
