LONG OVERDUE.
A PROFESSIONAL THIEF.
STOLE FROM SLEEPING MAN.
NINE MONTHS' IMPRISONMENT.
"You are a thief, and you should be put in gaol," Mr. F. K. Hunt told Leonard Charles Haskell (22), in sending him to gaol for nine months, at the Police Court this morning. Haskell pleaded guilty to stealing £4 in money, the property of John Clarkson, a muff chain valued at £1, the property of Billie Hughes, and an attache case valued at 10/, from Myrtle West. "This young man is long overdue here," said Chief Detective Cummings. "He rented a room in a boardinghouse, and went to another man's room, stealing the £4 while Clarkson was asleep. At first he denied the charge when interviewed, but, when the money was found under the mattress in his bedroom, he admitted it. He is a professional thief, and goes to boardinghouses and robs people while they are asleep. He has been previously sentenced to imprisonment for theft at Wellington, Christchurch and Timaru." On the first charge Haskell was sentenced to sx months' imprisonment, to be cumulative with a three months' sentence on the second. On the third charge he was convicted and discharged.
