" PREPARING FOR THE POLLS,

With the close of nominations for the municipal and local elections that take place throughout New Zealand on April 27, arrangements for the polls have been put in hand, and the returning officers and staffs in the various districts will be fully occupied after Easter in completing the arrangements during the week that remains before election dav.

The position in Auckland is unprecedented. Interest in the campaign that is now in progress is evidenced by the record entry of candidates for the- City Council, for which 61 nominations have been received. Ther° are 21 seats, and the choice that is offered to electors is thus in the ratio cf almost three to one. Additional nominations are (S denoting fitting members): — NEWMARKET. -Mayoralty.—Mr. S. Donaldson (present Mayor), and Mr. A. Kent, member of the council. Council.—Messrs. H. J. Cooper (S) J Ilardley (8), X. Kelleway (S), F.' j' O'Meara (S), T. N. Sampson (S), G. E Smerdon (S), T. J. Watts (S), C R Wilson (S), A. W. Andrews, F. Appleton, A. E. Can ham, H. Gregory, C. H. K Mountain and A. R. Townsend; and Mrs Mary M. Dreavcr. BIRKENHEAD. Mr. W. B. Darlow was nominated for a seat on the Birkenhead Borouch Council before the close of nominations yesterday. There are twelve candidates.
