CLASSIFICATION OF ROADS,

ENFORCEMENT TO BK GRADUAL.

The Manukau County Council met yes. terday, Mr. F. Waters presiding, there being also present: Messrs. t". S. XlcCallum, J. S. Dickson, F. Kearney. L. Gilbertson, J. Luke, and S. W. House. Rain Delays Work.—The engineer, in his. report, stated that outsid. works had been hindered and im|>edcd to a great extent by rain. The season in that respect had been such that many undertakings were about two months late in being completed, and it was probable that some works will have to l»c left incomplete and deferred until next season. From a road construction |w>int of view there had beon practically no sum mer, and the programme of work has been l>eset with difficulty and retarded iu consequence.

Oreat South Road.—Work had pro | ceeded in all cases as rapidly as weather conditions permitted. The various lengths of concrete paving are opened to traffic as they t>eeomc sufficiently cored; i there were now only two rhort lengths of actual detour roads in use. There were, however, various long and short lengths of narrow side tracks, parallel to the paving, over which irafhe had to pass and which would require to Ih> used for some further time. The carrying of traffic and transport of heavy materials over these one-way tracks in wet weather presented some difficulty. Ap-j plication had been made to the Highways Board for authorisation of mrlherj moneys from the board's quota of cost; without this there would In? difficulty in financing the work further. The paving of the Doha in length would I*> deferred until after the winter, ami a deduction be made from the contract accordingly. In the meantime, it would l>e necessary to construct and maintain a trnflic-road over the filling, and the Highways Board had promised to contribute to the cost of this at the maintenance rate (30/ to £1 • up to a total cost of £300. With refer encc to the promised distribution of £."><»n to cover cost of deviation roads mnon; the local bodies concerned, no definite notification of the amount allocated to the county had yet been received from the Highways Board. Bridging Papakura Stream.—An inquiry was made by the Public Works Department asking if the Council intended to erect a permanent bridge over Papakura stream at Wallace Bond. It was decided that the chairman and certain members of the council get into touch with the Public Works Depart ment with the object of coining to some arrangement whereby a permanent bridge could lie erected.
